Legislation from the 1990s obligating each and every government agency to undergo an audit annually notwithstanding, the Pentagon \u2014 with its obscenely bloated allocation in the hundreds of billions eclipsing the defense spending of the next several nation-states, combined \u2014 managed to escape the nightmarish prospect of accountability in an audit, entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n

To reiterate, the United States Department of Defense \u2014 whose Fiscal Year 2018 budget hovers near a <\/span>profane<\/span><\/a> $700 billion despite heinous bookkeeping wherein <\/span>no on is entirely sure what happened to over $10 trillion<\/span><\/a> allotted it in annual budgets over the past three decades \u2014 has <\/span>never<\/span><\/i><\/a> faced an audit, <\/span>ever<\/span><\/i>, in departmental history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Defense Department is starting the first agencywide financial audit in its history, Pentagon officials announced today,\u201d<\/span><\/i> a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a> on Thursday explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Defense Department Comptroller David Norquist <\/span>told<\/span><\/a> the press he had received notification from the Office of the Inspector General <\/span>announcing<\/span><\/a> the first-ever audit of the Pentagon beginning this month \u2014 an endeavor so momentous in scope, no less than 1,200 auditors will be unleashed across the department to help ensure its completion. <\/span>[Notably, <\/span><\/i>the original DoD statement<\/span><\/i><\/a> cited the number of auditors to execute the probe at 2,400 \u2014 a figure which changed remarkably and without additional notation or explanation from the Pentagon as to the nature, typo or otherwise, of the error.]<\/span><\/i><\/p>
